Belitung , or Belitong ( the local language , named after a type of sea slug ) , formerly known as Billiton is an island off the east coast of Sumatra , Indonesia , flanked by the Gaspar Strait and Strait Karimata . The island is famous for white pepper ( Piper sp . ) Which in local language called sahang , and minerals such as tin ( Stannuum ) , quartz sand , white clay ( kaolin ) , and granite . As well lately become the natural destination alternatives . The island was formerly owned by the United Kingdom ( 1812 ) , before finally exchanged the Netherlands , together Bengkulu , with Singapore and New Amsterdam ( now part of New York ) . Its main town is Tanjung Pandan .
Belitung Island is divided into two districts namely Belitung province , capital is Tanjung Pandan , Belitung and East , its capital manggar .
The majority of the population , especially those living in coastal areas , are very familiar with the rich marine life with the results of marine fish . Variety of processed foods made from fish being populated daily diet . Wealth of the sea became a source of livelihood Belitung . Natural resources is no less important to people's lives is Belitung tin . Tin mining has been started since the time of the Dutch East Indies .
Belitung Island population is mainly ethnic Malays ( speak with Belitung dialect ) and the Hokkien and Hakka Chinese descent .
Geographically, the island of Belitung ( Malay ; Belitong ) located at 107 ° 31.5 ' - 108 ° 18 ' east longitude and 2 ° 31.5 ' -3 ° 6.5 ' south latitude . Overall size of the island of Belitung reaches 4,800 km ² or 480 010 ha.Pulau Belitung bounded on the north by the South China Sea , east bordering straits Karimata , south bordering the Java Sea and west bordering straits Gaspar . Around the island there are small islands like Isla Mendanau , Kalimambang , Gresik , Seliu and others.
